Hey, you're always asking me where I find stuff...
Lobster Sandwich
Sitting here doing some bits and pieces. At this point in time I am currently:
watching Jamie Oliver make
lobster sandwiches;
writing this blog entry;
doing some work for a friend;
trying to figure out how to sync my laptop Calendar with Google Calendar;
waiting to eat lunch.
Unfortunately lunch won't be a lobster sandwich.
Bone Table Demo
Yesterday the band recorded a demo. We went to James' studio (not a recording studio by the way - an artist's studio) at about 4pm and set up all the gear. Maggie's husband Tunji was the recording maestro, setting up all the microphones, connecting all the cables etc, and then sitting behind the laptop to handle the recording.

Laptop? Yes, that's right - a laptop. The world of recording music has changed so much since computers became cheaper and more powerful. So we had on hand more recording power than the Beatles ever had - not that we're as good as the Beatles of course.
It was an extraordinarily hot day so we were perspiring freely as we played, and we actually found it hard to play with our usual level of energy. It was interesting too how being aware that we were being recorded made us a little self-conscious as well. But we recorded most of our original songs, and a few of them have turned out nicely.
Tunji is going to prepare a rough mix, and we'll then choose which takes we want. Then Tunji will mix them properly and I'll put a couple of tracks up here for you to download.
Meanwhile there's
a set of photos here of the recording session - none of me (I was holding the camera) but you can see the other band members.

Australia vs Croatia
It's a bit hard to write this - I've just got back from some bar in SoHo. We woke up at 2:10am so we could go watch the Australia vs Croatia game. At the bar we ordered a few beers and sat there with 10 other fans watching the game. It was awesome - full of incidents and skill and all sorts of stuff. All I can say is - thankfully the game against Italy will be at a reasonable hour. Lord it's hard to type at 5:30am with 4 pints under your belt...
Little Link List 16
Music is crap -
we're all responsible;
The most awesome DJ mixing video you'll ever see -
4 DJ's make a song;
The band in question -
Birdy Nam Nam.
Australia v Japan
If you've been reading this for any length of time you'll have noticed that I obsess slightly about the Australian Football team (otherwise known as the Socceroos). Last year I flew up to Sydney to watch the qualifying match against Uruguay, and the euphoria of that match certainly made up for the misery of watching the Iran game, and the previous Uruguay games.
So tonight it's the real thing - it's the World Cup and we're playing Japan in our opening match, who will be very hard to beat.
I'm going to go to a bar in Lan Kwai Fong with some Japanese acquaintances - hopefully it won't be me crying into my beer at the end of the match.
Elvis, Bonetable & The Devil
Right, time for a musical update. Today I will cover the Downfall of Elvis, the Birth of Bonetable, and the Ascension of the Devil.
First up - Elvis' Downfall. A couple of weeks ago the drummer from the band I'm playing in mentioned that he'd been approached to help form an Elvis covers band. He suggested I play guitar in the band, and after he talked to me about it I thought it would be fun. As I understood it the band would focus on Elvis' early material. Then the drummer pulled out due to time constraints. However, the Manager found a new drummer and we had our first rehearsal last week. Elvis turned out to be a 60-year-old Chinese guy - a real Elvis enthusiast. In addition there was me on guitar, two other guitarists, a bass player, and
Tunj on drums. Unfortunately - we weren't too good. Elvis couldn't hit the high notes, I and the other guitarist didn't really know the songs, and the bass player doesn't seem to be able to play anything at all. Worse - we seemed to be heading for Fat Elvis territory very quickly indeed.
This was all slightly disappointing as apparently the Manager intended for us to try and play some shows in China, which would have been pretty cool. However, there's no way I'm going to devote time to a band that I'm not happy about being in. So, goodbye Elvis.
Second - Bonetable! That's right - our band is officially called Bonetable now, and after a
successful performance last week (our bass player Maggie has put up a video), we will be playing our first paid gig at
The Wanch on Saturday June 17th. Apparently we're playing for 4 hours, so come along and you'll get to learn all of our songs really well. Show starts about 9pm.
Third - The Devil. As you may be aware this week Tuesday was the 6th of June, 2006. Or as other people would have it - 6/6/6. Which of course is the (popular) Number of the Beast. And to celebrate the occasion some enterprising souls organised a
heavy metal concert at The Wanch. I went down to check it out and discovered that METAL is alive and well in Hong Kong. There were so many people there they couldn't all fit inside the venue. After the first two bands had finished I managed to get inside, where I was treated to some wonderfully loud music. It was actually pretty good, and I'm sure the next time a significant METAL date comes around the organisers will find a slightly larger venue.
